Charophyta merupakan kelompok parafiletik dari alga hijau air tawar, yang dikenal sebagai karofit . Dalam beberapa klasifikasi, kelompok ini diperlakukan sebagai suatu divisi,^[1] tetapi dalam sistem lain kerap pula dianggap sebagai suatu superdivisi.^[2]

Tumbuhan darat, yaitu Embryophyta, berevolusi dari dalam kelompok Charophyta, kemungkinan berasal dari karofit uniseluler yang telah beradaptasi di lingkungan darat.^[3] Di antara kelas-kelas dalam kelompok ini, Zygnematophyceae dianggap sebagai kelompok saudara bagi Embryophyta.^{[4][5][6][7][8]}
