Yakubin hitam sebelumnya ditempatkan dalam genus monotipikMelanotrochilus, namun suara, anatomi, dan perilaku berkembangbiak menempatkannya dalam Florisuga bersamaan dengan yakubin leher-putih. Spesies ini monotipik.[5][6][7]

Deskripsi
Yakubin hitam memiliki panjang 12 hingga 13cm (4,7 hingga 5,1in) long. Jantan berbobot sekitar 9g (0,32oz) sementara betina 8g (0,28oz). Burung dewasa dari kedua jenis kelamin sebagian besar berbulu hitam, dengan punggung bawah berwarna coklat zaitun dan bulu ekor atas dan sayap.[8]
