The seat is reserved for candidates from the Scheduled Tribes and comprises Yercaud taluk, Vazhapadi taluk, and portions of Salem and Attur taluks. It is a part of the wider Kallakurichi Lok Sabha constituency for national elections to the Parliament of India.[2] The constituency has been in existence since 1957 election.
