Lumut hati ini tumbuh di tempat-tempat teduh di habitat coastal sage scrub. Spesies ini berasosiasi dengan lumut hati endemik langka lainnya, Geothallus tuberosus. Sebagian besar habitatnya berada di dekat kawasan perkotaan dan terancam oleh hilangnya habitat.[1]
Nama spesies ini terkadang salah dieja dalam literatur sebagai Sphaerocarpos drewei.
