Nama Assiniboine berasal dari istilah Asiniibwaan dalam bahasa Ojibwe yang berarti "Sioux Batu". Mereka diberi julukan tersebut karena suku Assiniboine pernah memiliki kebiasaan memanaskan batu untuk merebus makanan mereka.
