Mehta was enrolled as an advocate on 8 August 1986. He practiced mainly in criminal and constitutional matters. He was elevated as a judge of the Rajasthan High Court on 30 May 2011.[3] He was appointed as chief justice of the Gauhati High Court on 15 February 2023.[4] He was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 9 November 2023.[5][6]
