O'Connell's spiny rat Species of mammals belonging to the spiny rat family of rodents
O'Connell's spiny-rat (Proechimys oconnelli ) is a species of rodent in the family Echimyidae .[ 2] It is endemic to Colombia .
Phylogeny
Morphological characters and mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequences showed that P. oconnelli belongs to the so-called semispinosus group of Proechimys species, and shares closer phylogenetic affinities with the other member of this clade: P. semispinosus .[ 3] [ 4] [ 5]
Species-level cladogram of the genus Proechimys .
The cladogram has been reconstructed from morphological characters and mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome b ) sequences.[ 3] [ 4] [ 6] [ 5]
