Pneumosit tipe I dikenal dengan sebutan simple squamous alveolar cells. Pneumosit tipe I bertugas merespon pertukaran oksigen dan karbondioksida yang terjadi di alveoli.[1]
Pneumosit tipe II
Pneumosit tipe II dikenal dengan sebutan great alveolar cells atau sel septal. Sekresi sel septal berupa surfaktan, umumnya adalah dipalmitoilfofatidilkolina, yang berguna untuk menurunkan tensi permukaan paru.
