Ten teams, including the hosts England, featured in a series of matches played in July and August 2002 at Manchester's MEN Arena.[2][3][4][5] With a team captained by Kathryn Harby-Williams,[6] featuring Catherine Cox, Sharelle McMahon, Nicole Richardson and Peta Squire and coached by Jill McIntosh, Australia won the tournament after defeating New Zealand 57–55 in the gold medal match. The match was tied at 46–46 at the end of normal time, and 14 minutes of extra-time saw the sides still level at 55–55. In sudden death extra-time, Sharelle McMahon scored the vital point to give Australia the necessary two-goal gap to win the gold medal.[1][7][8][9] Jamaica finished the tournament in third place after defeating England 55–53 in the bronze medal match.[10][11] Head coaches and captains Team Head coach Captain Australia[8]Jill McIntosh[9]Kathryn Harby-Williams[6] Barbados CanadaSharon Butler[12]Dulcina Wind[13] EnglandLyn Gunson[14]Olivia Murphy[11][15] FijiMargaret Corbett[16]Unaisi Rokoura[17] JamaicaMaureen HallOberon Pitterson New Zealand[8][18][19]Ruth Aitken[20]Julie Seymour[21] South AfricaLouise de PlessisBronwyn Bock-Jonathan[22]Mable Van Der Vyver[23] Sri Lanka Wales[24]Raewyn HenryJoanna Griffiths[13] Sources:[25] Squads Main article: Netball at the 2002 Commonwealth Games squads Pool A Round 1 26 July 2002 Wales 48–47 Sri Lanka 15:00 Mair Jones 31Jamilla Harris 13 Report Sashika Samarasinghe 28Gishanthi Jayakody 19 26 July 2002 England 87–26 Canada 18:30 Alex Astle 30Joanne Steed 22Abby Teare 18Jess Garland 17 Report Dulcina Wind 14Maralyn Hope 12 Round 2 27 July 2002 New Zealand 101–17 Canada 13:00 Daneka Wipiiti 39Donna Loffhagen 34Irene van Dyk 20/21 (95%)Belinda Colling 8 Report Maralyn Hope 10Patricia Carlson 7 27 July 2002 England 75–34 Sri Lanka 18:30 Alex Astle 31/41 (76%)Jess Garland 25Joanne Steed 19 Report Sashika Samarasinghe 13Prasadi Nalika 12Gishanthi Jayakody 8Anoma Sriyakanthi 1 Round 3 28 July 2002 New Zealand 116–26 Sri Lanka 13:00 Irene van Dyk 58/61 (95%)Donna Loffhagen 23Belinda Colling 21Daneka Wipiiti 14 Report Prasadi Nalika 14Sashika Samarasinghe 6Gishanthi Jayakody 6 28 July 2002 England 81–18 Wales 20:30 Alex Astle 42/66 (64%)Abby Teare 39/48 (81%) Report Sian Edwards 8Mair Jones 6?? 2 Round 4 29 July 2002 Wales 49–42 Canada 15:00 Mair Jones 37/47 (79%)Sian Edwards 12 Report Dulcina Wind 23Maralyn Hope 19 29 July 2002 England 35–67 New Zealand 20:30 Abby Teare 22Alex Astle 13 Report Irene van Dyk 44/48 (92%)Donna Loffhagen 15Belinda Colling 8 Round 5 30 July 2002 Canada 52–49 Sri Lanka 15:00 Dulcina Wind 30Maralyn Hope 22 Report Sashika Samarasinghe 26 ?Gishanthi Jayakody 12Prasadi Nalika 10 30 July 2002 New Zealand 81–23 Wales 18:30 Donna Loffhagen 35/38 (92%)Belinda Colling 23Daneka Wipiiti 23 Report Mair Jones 9Sian Edwards 7Jamilla Harris 7 Sources:[3][5] Table Pos Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts 1 New Zealand4400365101+2648 2 England4301278145+1336 3 Wales4202138251-1134 4 Canada4103137286-1492 5 Sri Lanka4004156291-1350 Qualified for Major semi-finals Qualified for Minor Semi-finals Qualified for 7th/10th classification Sources:[5][26] Pool B Round 1 26 July 2002 South Africa 52–42 Fiji 13:00 Sindiswe Gumede 43/52 (83%)Shani Welthagen 5Adele Jonker 2Alicia Senekal 1Wanda Geldenhuis 1 Report Matelita Shaw 22Paulini Tora 20 26 July 2002 Jamaica 65–20 Barbados 20:30 Simone Forbes 37Elaine Davis 28 Report Cheryl Squires 37Olivia Walcott 28 Round 2 27 July 2002 Jamaica 66–55 South Africa 15:00 Elaine Davis 46/54 (85%)Simone Forbes 20/21 (95%) Report Sindiswe Gumede 49/58 (84%)Adele Jonker 3Shani Welthagen 2Martha Machoga 1 27 July 2002 Australia 75–28 Barbados 20:30 Sharelle McMahon 24Catherine Cox 22Eloise Southby 18Jacqui Delaney 6 Report Cheryl Squires 16Olivia Walcott 11 Round 3 28 July 2002 South Africa 56–37 Barbados 15:00 Sindiswe Gumede 49Adele Jonker 6Shani Welthagen 1 Report Cheryl Squires 21Olivia Walcott 16 28 July 2002 Australia 83–32 Fiji 18:30 Catherine Cox 29/36 (81%)Sharelle McMahon 26Eloise Southby 18Jacqui Delaney 10 Report Matelita Shaw 14Taraima Rara 10Paulini Tora 8 Round 4 29 July 2002 Australia 74–38 South Africa 13:00 Catherine Cox 39/50 (78%)Sharelle McMahon 18Eloise Southby 17 Report Sindiswe Gumede 27/29 (93%)Adele Jonker 4Martha Machoga 7 29 July 2002 Jamaica 84–33 Fiji 18:30 Elaine Davis 58/64 (91%)Simone Forbes 18/20 (90%)Tiffannie Wolfe 8 Report Matelita Shaw 14/23 (61%)Paulini Tora 12Taraima Rara 7 Round 5 30 July 2002 Barbados 46–44 Fiji 13:00 Cheryl Squires 30Olivia Walcott 16 Report Matelita Shaw 19Taraima Rara 19Paulini Tora 6 30 July 2002 Australia 60–33 Jamaica 20:30 Sharelle McMahon 23Eloise Southby 20Catherine Cox 17 Report Elaine Davis 22Simone Forbes 11 Sources:[3][5] Table Pos Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts 1 Australia4400292131+1618 2 Jamaica4301248168+806 3 South Africa4202201219-184 4 Barbados4103131240-1092 5 Fiji4004151265-1140 Qualified for Major semi-finals Qualified for Minor Semi-finals Qualified for 7th/10th classification Sources:[5][27] Classification 7th/10th classification 31 July 2002 Sri Lanka 41–40 Barbados 13:00 Sashika Samarasinghe 22Gishanthi Jayakody 19 Olivia Walcott 13Cheryl Squires 11Denise Alleyne 11?
