Spesies ini tersebar dari Tiongkok Barat Daya hingga Vietnam timur laut. Jumlah individu keseluruhannya tidak diketahui, tetapi kuranng dari 500 ekor diyakini masih tersisa di Vietnam, dan 1,400–1,650 ekor di Tiongkok. Sekitar 60 langur hidup dalam penangkaran di kebun-kebun binatang di Amerika Utara. Spesies ini dinamai bedasarkan Auguste François, yang menjadi konsultan Prancis di Lungchow, Tiongkok selatan.[4]
