Kōtetsu (甲鉄code: ja is deprecated , artinya "Berlapis besi"), yang kemudian berganti nama menjadi Azuma (東code: ja is deprecated , "Timur") merupakan kapal perang berlapis besi pertama dari Angkatan Laut Kekaisaran Jepang. Dibangun di Prancis pada 1864 untuk Angkatan Laut Negara-Negara Konfederasi dengan nama CSS Stonewall, dan diakuisisi dari Amerika Serikat pada Februari 1869, kapal tersebut merupakan sebuah kapal perang ram berlapis besi. Ia memiliki peran dalam Pertempuran Angkatan Laut Teluk Hakodate pada Mei 1869, yang menandai akhir Perang Boshin, dan selesainya pendirian Restorasi Meiji.

Kapal saudarinya Cheops dijual ke Angkatan Laut Prusia, menjadi Prinz Adalbert.

Asal mula

Kōtetsu dibangun oleh pembangun kapal Lucien Arman di Bordeaux, Prancis. Aslinya dinamai Sphynx,^[1][2] kapal tersebut awalnya dibangun untuk Angkatan Laut Konfederasi pada Perang Saudara Amerika.
