Winters was selected in the tenth round of the 1987 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns.[2] He spent two seasons with the team before playing for the Giants in 1989 and the Chiefs in 1990 and 1991. With all three teams, he primarily served as a long snapper.[3]
Winters was the Packers' starting center serving for eight straight seasons (1993–2000). He played in the Pro Bowl and also earned USA Today All-Pro honors in 1999. His nickname was "Old Bag of Donuts".[4]
