Setelah kemerdekaan Chad, Zouar memainkan peran penting selama Perang Saudara Chad dan Konflik Chad-Libya. Kota ini dikepung tahun 1968 oleh pemberontak FROLINAT dipimpin oleh Mahamat Ali Taher, dan dapat diselamatkan setelah tibanya pasukan ekspedisi Prancis pada bulan Agustus.[1] One of the last strongholds held by the government in the north, it was attacked in June 1977 by the People's Armed Forces (FAP), forcing the garrison to evacuate.[2]
