Film ini merupakan film ke-19 dalam rangkaian Film Animasi Klasik Walt Disney. Sewaktu pembuatan film ini sedang berlangsung, Walt Disney meninggal dunia sehingga menjadi film terakhir yang diproduksi sendiri oleh Walt Disney. Film ini diangkat dari buku berjudul sama karangan Rudyard Kipling. Ceritanya tentang anak laki-laki bernama Mowgli yang dibesarkan oleh serigala. Lagu-lagu dalam film ini nantinya menjadi lagu klasik Disney, seperti "The Bare Necessities" dan "I Wan'na Be Like You". Sebagian besar lagu diciptakan oleh Richard M. Sherman dan Robert B. Sherman. Sebagai sutradara adalah Wolfgang Reitherman, sementara putranya sendiri, Bruce Reitherman mengisi suara Mowgli. Sekuel film ini, The Jungle Book 2, dirilis pada tahun 2003.
