If a qualified editor cared to take on modification of this template to support "upright" image scaling as per File:, that would be a tremendous contribution to the implementation of the image size user preference. Given the widespread usage of the template, this will have to happen eventually if Wikipedia takes the user preference seriously; and there's no time like the present. ―Mandruss☎ 20:07, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
The policy WP:IMGSIZE states (emphasis not added):
Except with very good reason, do not use|px (e.g. |thumb|300px), which forces a fixed image width. In most cases upright=scaling factor should be used, thereby respecting the user's base preference (which may have been selected for that user's particular devices).
There is no very good reason to use fixed sizes for larger images; in fact the user preference is arguably even more important for larger images. ―Mandruss☎ 20:55, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
Support this request for wide_image and multiple_image (if possible). Thanks. -SusanLesch (talk) 18:40, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
Support per nom (this one will run and run until the error is corrected or all uses of it suddenly get broken by a global edit that changes all uses of NNNNpx to upright=NNNN/4. It is only a matter of time.) --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 11:41, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
Since sizing in pixels is deprecated, is there a way to size relative to the reader's prefs? Equivalent to "upright" in bracket formatting? — kwami (talk) 20:19, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
The problem is not only #No scrollbar on mobile browser (again). On Firefox Linux, the scrollbars auto-hide after a few seconds. Can we have an icon or border to improve discoverability? 172.97.141.219 (talk) 01:28, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
One possible solution is implementing TemplateStyles for this module. But before this implementation, anyone who have good experiences on web design should make some series of debuggs to get solution, maybe try a mobile browser that is possible to use user style. -- Great Brightstar (talk) 15:12, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
Request to add inner border
This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= parameter to no to reactivate your request.
I made an experimental feature to add inner border via the thumbimage class so that the visual appearance of this template should be closer to {{CSS image crop}}, {{Scalable image}}, {{Annotated image}}, {{Image frame}}.
Currently the problem is, if |border=no is used, this border should be dropped as well, but I don't know how to implement in this module. -- Great Brightstar (talk) 15:38, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
Unfortunately, there's something unresolved. In case 4 and case 8, the thumbimage class should be dropped if |border=no is used, but I felt no idea to do that, who can write Lua code for fix? -- Great Brightstar (talk) 07:29, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
Does anyone have any idea how to use this template for wide templates? Specifically, I would like to use it for Template:Family tree. It can get rather wide and when it does, it contracts and becomes difficult to read. I am reluctant to expand the family tree at Baldwin III of Jerusalem#Childhood for this reason. Dir= parameter request
Is it possible to add center as an option for dir? Currently, left or right are the only values available. There are situations when it would be ideal if the centre of the image was the initial visible portion. Firebrace (talk) 11:41, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
From Help:Pictures: Short, wide images sometimes benefit from upright factors greater than 1.0. Factors greater than about 2.5 can generate large images that cause problems with some browsers...Images wider than 550px or so are often better treated as a panorama, which can be created with the {{Wide image}} template. My understanding is that the purpose of this template is to allow for scroll bars to appear for those users/browsers for which the image is too large to display as a whole; I don't know if there is any width-to-height threshold. Wh1pla5h99 (talk) 11:42, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
I was going to say 2.5 upright and 550px seems to go against MOS:IMAGESZ, but Help:Pictures looks to be dealing with centred images which is a different situation. As with a lot of documentation it's also out of date, 2.5 would be 625px not 550px due to the default thumb size changing from 220px to 250px in April 2025. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested«@» °∆t° 16:41, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
So we should centre images larger than 1.6 (400px) and use Wide image for images larger than 2.2 (550px) Wh1pla5h99 (talk) 17:14, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
