Not done: this template is meant to be placed before a user's question. When someone answers it, they get a different template message. Primefac (talk) 12:18, 25 December 2024 (UTC)

Whilst I appreciate the idea of having a self-hosted chat platform, is this really the most user-friendly way in today's time? WP:DISCORD is a lot more popular, so maybe including that as an option at least would be useful. —Matrixping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 21:34, 4 November 2025 (UTC)

I think we need an IRC live help FAQ for experienced editors who don't use IRC, just so they can understand what happens when someone follows that Live Help link. In a nutshell:WP:IRCHELP has a button to connect to a web interface to the #wikipedia-en-help channel on Libera.Chat.
Joining the IRC help channel this way doesn't require any kind of login, and the visitor is assigned a random temporary username so that helpers can distinguish between different visitors who might be seeking help at the same time. The visitor doesn't need to know what "IRC" means, so maybe that could be de-emphasised in newbie-facing templates.
The only editors who can help are those who have a Wikipedia/Wikimedia cloak. These require manual approval.
New editors do join the Wikimedia WP:DISCORD for help with specific issues. All Discord users need a Discord account, which is bound by the Discord terms of use and privacy policy, but they don't need to link their Discord and Wikimedia accounts. Ten years ago I might have said that having to create a Discord account was a higher barrier to entry than joining IRC anonymously, but that may no longer be true for internet users who have grown up with Discord. Discord is only "more popular" amongst certain groups, mainly gamers in NA/Europe/SEA. Your average employee editing Wikipedia due to orders from the brutes upstairs isn't going to use it, and nor are those from Africa or South Asia (both of which are very common helpees on IRC). IRC has a lot less technical overhead than Discord, as well, allowing it to work on more devices and systems. —Jéské Courianov^_^vthreadscritiques 23:38, 4 November 2025 (UTC)

Hyperlinked images need alt text because screen readers need some text to read in order to announce the associated link, and this template's icon has none; since the icon is public domain, it can simply be unlinked and have a blank |alt= attribute added so screen readers don't attempt to read it, per MOS:BLANKALT:
When transcluded in the wrong namespace, the icon is already unlinked, but still needs a blanked alt attribute:
