Tahun 1582, Ketika Perancis merubah format penanggalan dari kalender Julian menjadi kalender Gregorian, seperti yang disebut oleh dewan Trent tahun 1563. Masyarakat yang terlambat mengetahui informasi tersebut atau terlambat menyadari bahwa tanggal tahun baru telah berubah menjadi 1 Januari dan tetap merayakan tahun baru di akhir bulan Maret sampai 1 April menjadi bahan leluconan dan disebut hoax.
