Vincent van Gogh melukis sekitar 18 lukisan pohon zaitun, kebanyakan di Saint-Rémy-de-Provence pada 1889. Atas permintaannya sendiri, ia tinggal di sebuah suaka disana dari Mei 1889 sampai Mei 1890 untuk melukis taman-taman di suaka tersebut dan, saat ia diizinkan untuk pergi ke luar temboknya, pohon-pohon zaitun, sipres, dan ladang-ladang gandum di sekitarnya.
