Riwayat hidup
Licona dibesarkan dalam sebuah keluarga Kristen dan menjadi orang Kristen pada usia 10 tahun. Ketika mulai kuliah di Liberty University, ia bercita-cita untuk melayani sebagai pemusik dan memperoleh gelar sarjana dalam performansi musik (saxophone). Ia juga mahir dalam beladiri, belajar di bawah bimbingan Sang Ki Eun dan Robert Fujimura,[2] yang pernah menjadi Executive Director United States Taekwondo Union.[3]
Licona meraih gelar Ph.D. dalam bidang Studi Perjanjian Baru (University of Pretoria) berpredikat "with distinction" dan nilai tertingggi, sekaligus gelar M.A. dalam bidang Religious Studies dari Liberty University. Ia pernah menjadi Apologetics Coordinator pada North American Mission Board (Southern Baptist Convention) sampai tahun 2011. Bukunya The Resurrection of Jesus: A New Historiographical Approach diakui oleh banyak sarjana Perjanjian Baru serta sejarawan terkemuka.[4][5][6] Ia juga telah memberi kuliah pada lebih dari 100 kampus universitas di seluruh Amerika Utara dan muncul dalam berbagai acara televisi maupun radio, termasuk Faith Under Fire.[7] Ia muncul dalam versi DVD The Case for Christ dan merupakan salah seorang sarjana yang diwawancarai dalam buku Lee StrobelThe Case for the Real Jesus.[8] Licona juga muncul dalam sebuah film dokumenter yang dirilis padan bulan Februari 2015 berjudul "Mining for God" yang membahas bagaimana Kekristenan sering disalahartikan dan disalahpahami dalam budaya barat modern.

Kasus sejarah pada Kebangkitan Yesus
Riset doktoral Licona berkaitan dengan penelitian Kebangkitan Yesus menggunakan metodologi seorang sejarawan. Ia menyatakan bahwa hampir semuanya sarjana yang menulis tentang topik kebangkitan Yesus adalah sarjana Alkitab dan filsuf, hampir tidak ada yang mendapatkannya latihan mengenai filsafat sejarah dan metode sejarah dalam membandingkan hipotesis.[9] Licona berkontribusi sebagai sumber utama dalam topik ini serta mengaplikasikan hasil temuannya pada pertanyaan apakah Yesus benar-benar bangkit dari kematian dalam bukunya The Resurrection of Jesus: A New Historiographical Approach. Buku ini terdiri dari 718 halaman dan memuat lebih dari 2.000 catatan kaki.[10]
Kehidupan pribadi
Licona menikah dengan Debbie dan mempunyai dua anak: seorang putri, Allie, dan seorang putra, Zach. Menantu laki-lakinya, Nick Peters, adalah seorang apologet Kristen yang secara teratur menulisnya blog[11] dan menyiarkan podcast mingguan bernama "Deeper Waters".[12]
