2020 census
As of the 2020 census, Brusly had a population of 2,578.[7] The median age was 38.9 years. 24.9% of residents were under the age of 18 and 18.2% were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 87.0 males age 18 and over.[8]
99.4% of residents lived in urban areas, while 0.6% lived in rural areas.[9]
There were 998 households in Brusly, of which 37.8% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 52.1% were married-couple households, 14.9% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 28.0% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 22.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The town also had 764 families.[8]
There were 1,068 housing units, of which 6.6% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 0.5% and the rental vacancy rate was 13.1%.[8]
2000 census
As of the census[11] of 2000, there were 2,020 people, 749 households, and 587 families residing in the town. The population density was 924.1 inhabitants per square mile (356.8/km2). There were 783 housing units at an average density of 358.2 per square mile (138.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 72.77% Caucasian, 25.74% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.89% of the population.
There were 749 households, out of which 36.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.5% were married couples living together, 15.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.5% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.4% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.4 males. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there were 88.2 men.
The median income for a household in the town was $47,619, and the median income for a family was $55,100. Males had a median income of $37,330 versus $25,719 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,060. About 5.9% of families and 6.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.0% of those under age 18 and 13.5% of those age 65 or over.
